Cosequin for Cats — What the Joint Supplement Evidence Actually Shows
Approximately 90% of cats over 12 have radiographic signs of osteoarthritis. Most owners don’t notice because cats mask pain well. Cosequin’s glucosamine (250mg) and chondroitin sulfate (200mg) per capsule target the same mechanisms studied in canine and human joint research.
The clinical evidence
A 2010 double-blind study (Lascelles et al.) found glucosamine/chondroitin supplementation improved activity levels in arthritic cats over 12 weeks. Effect size was moderate. This is stronger evidence than most pet supplements can claim.
How to administer
Sprinkle capsule contents onto wet food. The powder is flavorless in practice — nine of ten owner reports indicate no food refusal. Dose once daily for 4–6 weeks before assessing response.
Realistic expectations
Cosequin is not a pain medication. It supports cartilage maintenance and may reduce inflammation marginally over time. For cats already showing obvious pain (limping, vocalizing on palpation), combine with vet-prescribed meloxicam rather than relying on supplements alone.
