Feliway Classic — The Evidence Behind Synthetic Cat Pheromones

Feliway mimics the F3 facial pheromone cats deposit when they rub their face on objects — a marking behavior associated with territorial security. The active compound, synthetic cheek pheromone, has been studied in peer-reviewed settings with generally positive results for reducing urine marking and hiding behavior.

What it works well for

• Hiding and social withdrawal in senior cats adjusting to household changes
• Urine marking (different from incontinence — if your senior cat is losing bladder control, this isn’t the fix)
• Multi-cat tension when a new pet is introduced

Coverage and placement

One diffuser covers approximately 700 sq ft. For a multi-story home, use one per floor. Position near where the anxious cat spends most of its time — not in a hallway or high-traffic area where it will diffuse before the cat encounters it.

Realistic expectations

Feliway works in about 65–70% of cases based on published studies. It is not sedative and creates no dependency. Give it 4 weeks before assessing effectiveness.
