PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum — Does Moving Water Really Help Senior Cats Drink More?
Cats evolved as desert animals with a low thirst drive. Many senior cats with subclinical kidney disease compound their CKD by not drinking enough. A circulating fountain addresses the instinct to prefer moving water and has been shown to increase daily intake in several small studies.
Intake measurement
We used a measured pitcher to fill the fountain and tracked intake over 7 days with three senior cats. Average daily intake increased 28% compared to a standard bowl. This aligns with published research (range: 20–40% increase, depending on the individual cat).
Cleaning requirement
This is non-negotiable: clean the pump weekly, replace the carbon filter every 2–4 weeks. Biofilm builds rapidly in pet fountains. The Drinkwell’s reservoir is wide-mouthed and dishwasher safe (top rack).
Noise level
The fountain is audible in a quiet room — a light gurgling sound. Cats who startle easily may need a week to habituate. Reduce flow rate with the included flow adjustment ring if necessary.
