K&H Thermo-Kitty — Heated Beds and Arthritic Senior Cats
Joint stiffness worsens in cold environments. For senior cats with arthritis, a thermostatically controlled heated bed can reduce morning stiffness and encourage the rest that supports recovery.
Thermostat accuracy
K&H rates the Thermo-Kitty at 102°F when occupied (body-heat activated) and 12–15°F above ambient when empty. We measured 99°F surface temp in a 68°F room after 30 minutes of cat use — within acceptable range. The thermostat prevents overheating, which is critical for cats who can’t easily move away if too warm.
Wattage
The small model draws 4 watts. Running 16 hours/day costs approximately $0.20/month at the US average electricity rate — negligible.
Safety considerations
Never use heated beds with cats who have reduced sensation (neurological conditions). The 6-foot cord uses a chew-resistant coating but should be routed away from habitual chewing areas. UL-listed.
